How to get to Guanajuato

The "Del Bajio International Airport" (BJX) in Leon is the closest airport serving Guanajuato, and is located within about 20 km (12 miles) from Guanajuato.
International airlines serving this airport with non-stop flights include Aeromexico (Los Angeles, CA, one daily fight), American Airlines (Dallas, TX, two daily flights) and Continental Airlines (Houston, TX, six daily flights).

You can fly as well to Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and then to Guanajuato (BJX). There are six daily flight from Mexico City to Guanajuato served by Aeromexico and Mexicana.
Alternatively you can fly to Mexico City and then take a bus. Buses to Guanajuato depart from Mexico City International Airport and from the North Terminal (Terminal del Norte), which is connected with Mexico City International Airport by a direct metro line.
The bus ride from Mexico City to Guanajuato is around 5 hours.

In Guanajuato

If you arrive at "Del Bajio Airport" you can take a taxi cab to Guanajuato. After going through immigration and customs, you will find three booths to the left (inside the airport) where you can purchase a ticket for a taxi cab to Guanajuato. You have to specify your destination city, Guanajuato in this case, and the name of your hotel. The charge is approximately 42 USD, and you can pay with either American or Mexican currency. The cabs are outside the airport and they are assigned according to the cab number in your ticket. The cab usually takes no more than 45 minutes to drive you to the hotel.

Guanajuato's bus terminal is very small and it is located right outside of the city. If you arrive by bus to Guanajuato you can just walk outside of the terminal and wait for a taxi cab. These usually arrive very frequently. The cabs are green and they charge approximately 35 MXN. These cabs will most likely only take Mexican currency. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the hotels from the bus terminal.

All the conference talks will take place at the "Real de Minas" Hotel, for which we have negotiated special prices. If you plan to stay at the "Mansion del Cantador" Hotel, then you will have to walk to the conference site. However, this is a very short 6 minutes walk. Using the map below, you can walk east along the "Calle Cantador" (a street) until reaching a small traffic circle, where you turn south and walk along the "Av. Miguel Hidalgo" (an avenue). After following this small avenue you will reach the "Real de Minas" Hotel, which will be located in the opposite side of the avenue. You can recognize it from the photograph in our Accommodation link.

Guanajuato is a small city which is very well suited for sightseeing. Most places of interest are within walking distance. However, be warned that the whole area has several steep streets that some people might find kind of tiring to walk. The downtown area can be easily identified in the map below; it is located around the "Jardin Union" mark. The "Jardin Union" is a small plaza which is used as a reunion place. Here you will find several eating places; most of these are traditional Mexican food, but there are also a couple of places serving Italian food. Right in front of the "Jardin Union" you will find the "Teatro Juarez" which is a showcase for concerts and operas. To the north of "Jardin Union" you will find the main buildings of the University of Guanajuato. These buildings are beautiful examples of the Mexican colonial architecture; they used to host the (catholic) Jesuit monastery and school.

You can get to the "Jardin Union" downtown area by taking a cab from your hotel. The cab will charge you 25 to 30 MXN. Once there, you can walk around to know the place. To go back, you can just look for a cab on any of the nearby streets.

Here are some instructions in case you decide to do some walking; please refer to the map below. First, walk north along "Av. Miguel Hidalgo" until you reach "Av. Juarez". Here you turn west until you reach the "Mercado Juarez"; this is a market where you can find some traditional crafts. To the north of this market you will find the "Alhondiga de Granaditas"; this is a historic landmark of the Mexican independence which also hosts a museum. If you followed "Av. Miguel Hidalgo" and after the market, there will be a right angle turn to your left. If you continue walking along this turn you will shortly reach the University of Guanajuato buildings. From there you can go south to the "Jardin Union".
If at any point you do not feel like walking any more, you can take a cab in any street.
